If you’re looking into personal training in Duluth, you’ve probably noticed two very different options: training 1-on-1 with a coach, or training in a small group where a coach works with a few people at once. Both can work. The right one depends on your goals, your budget, and what actually keeps you showing up.
Our coaches have this conversation with new members all the time, so here’s an honest breakdown of semi-private vs. 1-on-1 personal training, who each one suits, and how to figure out which is right for you.
What Is Semi-Private Personal Training?
Semi-private training sits between fully private sessions and a typical group class. A small number of people train at the same time with a coach on the floor the entire session. The key difference from a group class: everyone isn’t doing the same workout. Each person follows their own program, built for their goals and fitness level.
At Ferris Fitness, semi-private sessions are capped at 6 people. That cap is on purpose. It’s small enough that your coach can watch your form, adjust your weights, and know exactly where you are in your program, but big enough that you’re training alongside people who are working hard too.
What Is 1-on-1 Personal Training?
1-on-1 training is exactly what it sounds like: you and a coach, with nobody else in the session. Every minute of the coach’s attention is on you. It’s the most personalized option, and it’s also the most expensive, because you’re paying for a coach’s full hour.
We offer 1-on-1 personal training in Duluth for people who want or need that level of focus. Most of our members, though, end up choosing semi-private, and the reasons below explain why.

Semi-Private vs. 1-on-1: A Side-by-Side Look
Coaching attention
1-on-1 wins on pure attention, no question. But in a well-run semi-private session, you still get real coaching on every set. With a cap of 6, a coach can see everyone, correct form in real time, and push you when you need it. What you don’t get is someone standing over you during your rest periods, and many people find they don’t miss that.
Cost
Semi-private training costs less per session than 1-on-1 because the coach’s time is shared. For a lot of busy professionals, that’s the difference between training three times a week consistently and training once a week and hoping it’s enough.
Motivation and community
This is where semi-private often surprises people. Training next to the same faces each week builds a kind of accountability you can’t get alone. People notice when you miss a session. They celebrate when you hit a new personal best. It’s one of the things our members mention most. As one member’s Google review puts it: “It’s more than just a gym.”
Personalization
In both formats at Ferris Fitness, your program is built for you. Semi-private doesn’t mean generic. Your workouts are based on your goals, your experience, and your progress, and your nutrition plan is built from your STYKU 3D body scan.
Comfort for beginners
Some people assume 1-on-1 is better if you’re new or nervous. Sometimes it is. But a small, judgment-free group can actually feel easier than having all eyes on you. Another member’s review says it simply: “nobody makes you feel ashamed for your build.”
Who Semi-Private Training Is Best For
- You want a custom program and real coaching, at a lower cost than private sessions.
- You do better with a bit of energy and community around you.
- You want to train consistently, three times a week, without blowing up your budget.
- You’ve tried a big gym and felt lost or anonymous on the floor.
Who 1-on-1 Training Is Best For
- You want a coach’s full attention for the entire session.
- You have very specific goals or needs that call for a fully individual session. If you’re working around an injury or a medical condition, check with your doctor first and tell your coach so your program can be adjusted.
- You strongly prefer to train without anyone else around.

What Matters More Than the Format
Here’s the honest truth: the format is only one piece. Most people who’ve struggled to get results before didn’t fail because they picked the wrong training style. They failed because there was no real plan, no nutrition guidance, and nobody checking in when life got busy.
That’s why every Ferris Fitness in-gym membership is built on three pillars, whether you train semi-private or 1-on-1:
- Fitness: three coached workouts a week on a program built for you.
- Nutrition: a nutrition plan built from your STYKU 3D body scan, with weekly scans to track changes in body fat and muscle, not just the scale.
- Accountability: daily check-ins from our Client Success Director, so you’re never doing this alone.
One member’s Google review sums it up: “This is the type of coaching and accountability you need if you are looking to start and/or continue your fitness journey.”
